Whether you're chasing a personal best, working toward your Randonneur Round the Year (RRtY) award, or aiming to complete your first brevet, this is your challenge. The road awaits, and the experience will stay with you long after the finish line.

BRM400 | Kurzeme | LV
Date: Saturday, August 8, 2026 • Start Time: 08:00
Distance: 400km • Elevation Gain: 2,315m total climbing (cumulative over the full route, not the highest point reached)
Start Location: Tukums

This 400km route is an official ACP-certified brevet designed for experienced cyclists seeking a structured and rewarding adventure that combines distance, terrain, and self-sufficiency into a single test of endurance. The ride follows randonneuring principles—self-supported, unassisted between checkpoints, and run to a fixed time limit that rewards steady pacing over raw speed. Checkpoints along the way validate your progress and keep the ride honest, but beyond that you're on your own: managing your own nutrition, hydration, mechanical issues, and navigation using the provided GPX track. It's a format that has challenged and rewarded randonneurs for generations, and this event is no exception.

The Challenge: A 400km Journey

Terrain & Elevation
This is not a flat course. Over the full 400km route you'll accumulate 2,315 meters of total climbing—the sum of every rise on the route from start to finish, not the altitude of any single highest point. That distinction matters for pacing: the climbing is spread across the entire ride rather than concentrated in one big ascent, so the terrain will test your climbing legs and descending confidence again and again rather than just once. Expect significant, sustained climbing throughout the route—this is a true mountain-style challenge, and 2,315m of accumulated climbing over the distance rewards riders who prepare properly and pace conservatively from the start.

Time Limit
Participants have 27h to complete the full distance. This time limit includes all stops—you'll need to manage your pace, breaks, and checkpoint arrivals carefully to finish within the allowed time. We recommend planning your strategy in advance, including estimated arrival times at each checkpoint.

Self-Supported Philosophy
This is a self-supported ride with no following vehicle. You'll need to manage your own:

  • Nutrition & Hydration — carry enough or plan resupply stops
  • Mechanical Issues — bring tools and know basic repairs
  • Navigation — use the provided GPX file on a GPS device or cycling computer
  • Safety Equipment — mandatory lights, helmet, and reflective vest

Participants are encouraged to help each other, but official support vehicles will not be available on the route.

  • Rain: Waterproof jacket and shoe covers can make the difference between misery and comfort
  • Wind: Aero positioning and mental fortitude—Latvian winds can be challenging, especially in open areas
  • Sun: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and adequate hydration for clear days
  • Temperature Changes: Pack layers (base layer, mid-layer, windproof outer) that you can add or remove

Seasonal note: Summer brings warmer temperatures, but also the possibility of sudden thunderstorms. Stay hydrated and be prepared for both sun and rain.

Mental Preparation (400km)

Mental preparation is just as important as physical training for long-distance cycling. Here are specific strategies to help you succeed in your 400km brevet.

Mindset for 400km

The 400km brevet requires serious mental fortitude. You'll experience a full range of emotions—here's how to stay focused.

Overnight Strategy

You will ride through the night. Prepare for hallucinations, altered perception, and extreme fatigue. Accept that strange thoughts may occur—they're normal and temporary.

The 3 AM Challenge

Between 2 AM and 5 AM, your body and mind will want to stop. This is the critical mental battle. Have a plan: hot drink, extra clothing layer, sing aloud, call a friend, or find a riding partner.

Compartmentalization

Don't think about the remaining distance. Only think about reaching the next checkpoint. When that feels overwhelming, think only about the next 10km. When that feels hard, think about the next hour.

Sleep Deprivation Management

Accept that you will be tired. Plan for micro-sleeps if needed (15 minutes at a safe control point). Know the signs of dangerous fatigue (drifting, inability to focus, seeing things).

Motivation Anchors

Before the event, write down 3 reasons you're doing this brevet. Keep them on your phone or a note. When motivation crashes, read them aloud.

Remember: Your body can handle more than your mind believes. When you think you're done, you're only 40% done mentally. The finish line exists — keep moving toward it.

"The body achieves what the mind believes." — Anonymous Randonneur
